A one-day training programme on ” Cultivation and Seed Production Techniques in Green Manure Crops” was organized by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), FIAC – Kanniakoil, Puducherry, at AuroKrishi Training Centre, Matrikunj, Poothurai, on 28th August 2026. The programme aimed to enhance farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in the cultivation, management and seed production of green manure crops. The training focused on the importance of green manure crops in improving soil fertility, enhancing soil organic matter, increasing microbial activity, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and promoting sustainable and natural farming practices. Participants were also introduced to suitable green manure crops, their cultivation practices, harvesting, seed selection, storage and methods for maintaining quality seed for the upcoming harvesting season.
The programme commenced with an address by Shri Arumugam, Block Technology Manager, FIAC – Kanniakovil, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of incorporating green manure crops into sustainable farming systems. He explained how green manuring can improve soil structure, fertility and moisture retention while supporting long-term soil health. He also emphasized the importance of producing quality green manure seeds locally to ensure their timely availability to farmers.
Shri P. R. Srinivasamurthy, Project Director, AuroKrishi, gave a brief introduction to the mission and vision of AuroKrishi in promoting Natural and Conscious Farming. The technical sessions began with Shri Baburam, Chief Advisor, AuroKrishi, explained how crops such as sunhemp, dhaincha and other suitable green manure species can be incorporated into farming systems to increase organic matter and improve soil fertility.
He elaborated selection of suitable crops, land preparation, seed treatment, sowing methods, seed rate, irrigation, nutrient management and appropriate stages for incorporation into the soil. The session also highlighted how green manure crops can contribute to better soil structure, improved water-holding capacity and increased biological activity in the soil.
Shri Raja Ganesh, Training Coordinator, AuroKrishi, conducted an informative technical session focusing on seed production techniques in green manure crops, especially important practices such as selection of healthy and suitable mother plants, proper spacing, crop maintenance, weed management, irrigation, pest and disease management.
Shri Alex, Farm Manager, AuroKrishi and Shri Manimaran, Farm Coordinator, AuroKrishi, conducted practical demonstrations related to green manure crop cultivation. Participants were given practical guidance on Bio-input preparation and cleared their doubts.
The training highlighted that green manure crops play an important role in building soil fertility naturally and maintaining long-term agricultural productivity. Regular use of green manure can contribute to improved soil organic matter, better soil structure, enhanced microbial activity and efficient nutrient cycling.
The training programme concluded with an interactive discussion and feedback session, during which participants shared their farming experiences and discussed the practical application of green manure cultivation.
